Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/06/2011

Number: 1

noted lots of ants this year on the milkweed patch i am watching. would have eggs one day and next day they would be gone. i usually let nature run it's course but i put some ant traps in the patch, i had to choose between ants and monarchs and monarchs won. now i got lots of eggs, little caterpillers and a couple of real big ones. a simple fix and hopefully the monarchs with this little intervention will be fine. i also found a huge ant hill about 20 feet from the milkweed patch that we got rid of. been watching this patch for six years now and never saw so many ants before this year. noted some people using picnic table regularily a short distance away from patch throwing food on ground. not sure if this caused the population explosion of ants. we also moved the picnic table further away from patch and asked them not to throw food on ground and reason why. these people are now using garbage can and watching the adult butterflys in patch.
