Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/17/2011

Number: 1

Here in Thunder Bay, on the north western shore of Lake Superior, the Monarchs have arrived! They seem to have arrived later than usual. On July 1st (Canada Day) I was in Duluth, Minnesota, and checked the stand of Milkweed outside of a bird store at Miller Hill Mall. There were no signs of Monarchs yet. Back in Thunder Bay, I spotted first eggs on July 5th and there weren't very many. I didn't see another Monarch until July 16th and 17th. It is hotter than usual here and the first batch of eggs seem to have hatched rather quickly. The cats also seem to be growing quickly. (I wonder, does temperature affect the speed at which the process happens?) Some people in Thunder BAy who have Monarch habitats have not yet seen any, so I am wondering if there are fewer monarchs than usual so far.
