Oriole (1st Baltimore)

Date: 05/01/2011

Number: 1

On May 1, 2011 FOUR Baltimore Orioles were sited in the maple trees. Because this is the date we have seen them for the past two years, our bowls of grape jelly were already out. It took only one day for the orioles to remember where they saw their treats in our yard. Since then, numerous orioles are feeding every ten minutes. I forget exactly when, but new babies began to arrive at the jelly being taught by the adults. How exciting to watch! The adults do not like sharing this spot with one another, so the other adults patiently wait their turn on the nearby fence.

Each summer we try to offer oranges, but not one bird will go near the orange!

It's now July 23, and surprisingly, only one oriole was seen today. I do not remember when they begin their migration south and hope that it's not now.
