Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/06/2011

Number: 1

My first sighting of their migration south this 2011 season. It occurred just before sunset around my Mimosa tree. She was hovering about 20 feet off the ground at a little above eye level for me standing on my screened in porch about 15 feet away. After about 5 seconds, she flew over to a branch on the Mimosa and sat there for another 5 - 8 seconds then flew off. I thought I was seeing things and she looked light gray in color.

I immediately brewed up some sugar water and cooled it before placing it out on my second-floor hanging feeder just outside a bedroom window. I was rewarded the next morning with at least one of two birds feeding regularly. I set up a video camera to be able to observe their activity from my computer and have also taken some still shots to share with my sisters in other parts of the country.
