Video still image and the actual video of one of a total of about four male monarchs I observed in about 30 minutes patrolling the milkweeds that grow along a gravel farm road called 145th Street 1-2 miles east of Highway 15 and a few miles south and southeast of Hutchinson, Minnesota Aug. 2, 2011. Two female monarchs were also observed laying eggs on these gravel roadside milkweeds that are surrounded by mainly herbicide tolerant corn and soybean fields. Overall, monarch abundance seemed normal and typical for the first week of August in southern Minnesota.
