Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/15/2011

Number: 1

We visited Wenima Wildlife Area outside of Springerville three days in a row. On Saturday we found one new-looking male monarch nectaring on American Vetch. Sunday morning we found 5 monarchs in the East meadow mostly nectaring on Asclepias subverticillata - one was a female laying eggs. We also found two 5th instar larvae on A. subverticillata and one 5th instar larva on Asclepias speciosa. This morning I found 4 monarchs patrolling the milkweed and another flying upstream on the Little Colorado River. This area was located near the Wallow Fire and suffered heavy smoke damage. We visited the site in mid-June and mid-July but did not spot any monarchs at that time.
