Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/13/2011

Number: 70

Went down to Presqu'ile Provincial Park on Saturday about 10 am to check out the monarchs. Had to wear rubber boots as the grass was so wet. In two hours captured for examination about 70 monarchs - almost all moderately to well worn. A few samples for Tyler! In this particular large day use area, this is one of the few areas of the park where the grass is manicured like a lawn, BUT it is in front of a large wild grassy areas with lots of milkweed and many young plants have grown up through the lawn that was last cut a couple of weeks ago. There were lots of monarch eggs. Also, lots of clover in bloom in the grass, on which all the above 70 monarchs were feeding. Best capturing method was with a side swipe of the net. First time I have seen a couple of large caterpillars on the milkweed.
