Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/19/2011

Number: 1

Laura & I drove down to Canelo Marsh - Joe Billings and Doug Unangst joined us. We walked through the meadows of Canelo but together only saw about 15 monarchs. Most were male with one lone female resting in the grasses. We did not see any larvae or egg-laying, unusual for this location. Asclepias subverticillata patches were robust, surprisingly the Asclepias tuberosa was still in strong bloom and one small Asclepias incarnata was only about 4 to 6 inches tall. Two small Asclepias asperula had seed pods. The area was exceptionally dry. Usually sunflowers line the nearby road, but today there were none.Creek nearly dry.
