Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/21/2011

Number: 1

If "two is company, three is a crowd," maybe I saw a roost tonight.
Quick summary: I went to the same field I was at Friday evening (August19). Perhaps by night's end I had seen two or three dozen Monarchs. Very hard to tell. They roosted singly and then moved occasionally to different spots. In the end, I found one branch that had three Monarchs on it, two together, and one a foot away. Doesn't quite qualify as a roost, perhaps, but it was close.
(I'm not 100% sure, but I believe one of the butterflies was tagged. Despite the possible tag, I'm not sure if these were migrating Monarchs. Many of the butterflies crossed to road into a private, fenced in area that appeared to have a good milkweed patch. It's possible that these were local Monarchs that were just crossing the road to feed. Hard to say.
If my video shows clearly the presence of a tag, I might be able to get a freeze frame photo.)
