As of today, since last week, I have found 15 baby monarch caterpillars in my garden. I have not seen many monarch butterflies, however I grow milkweed along the back perimeter of the garden so they must be coming by to lay eggs. I usually leave the eggs outside on the plants, but I see many daddy-longlegs spiders around the plants and my suspicion is they are eating the babies if I don't get to them soon enough. The problem at the end of the summer is finding enough healthy milkweed to feed them. I do have a connection with a local farmer who has a lot of milkweed on his property.
