Practice Report (Any Species)

Date: 08/20/2011

Number: 1

I saw a Giant Swallowtail in my backyard on Saturday afternoon. Initially, I thought I was witnessing a really large black swallowtail. As I looked more closely, I noted the yellow bar across the forewings and from beneath, a pale yellow/green abdomen. It didn't register at first but suddenly the name came to mind and I realized I had just seen the first live Giant Swallowtail of my life. I am 53. It is a silly thing, but it might be the highlight of my summer. Are Giant Swallowtails endangered? I should note that my backyard is full of butterfly bush and I would encourage everyone to have plenty planted if they want to help butterfly populations expand. Other species have been well represented this year.
