At the Virginia Living Museum we held "Celebrate Butterflies" day on this date. The monarch caterpillar on display became a pupa the next day & was brought back to the Live Butterfly House exhibit on Monday along with several others. These hatching adults will be released & will probably be the parents of the migrating generation of monarchs.
Because we are releasing mated female monarch butterflies from the house to lay eggs on the milkweeds on the grounds, any sightings on the grounds may not truly represent the numbers of monarchs locally.
