Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 08/25/2011

Number: 30

We still have many many hummers coming to our feeders. Many many males still fighting for position. I did notice that the hummer we can most easily identify has become VERY fat in the last couple of days. He is still here and he is still defending his feeder. In the last day or two we do see a couple of more challengers than usual. They were juveniles, so we thought they might be new arrivals passing through. On the opposite side of the house we have a collection of 5 feeders within a foot or two of each other and we have had well over 30 hummers regularly feeding from those feeders. I was looking this morning and there were still many many males. We have so many coming to this feeder we can't identify them all individually, but they are still here. Just a day or two ago it hit me that they will leave in less than two weeks. Sad for us! We put out about 45 ounces, a quart and a half or so, a day. So they are consuming ALL of that every day. Needless to say that they are good entertainment for us...those five feeders are a foot or two away from our kitchen window so we have a ring side seat for observation of behaviors, markings, habits etc.. Some of the feeding patterns are fascinating. We'll keep you posted. I have listed 30+ for number sighted, but it is really uncountable, when I get up to about 12 at the same time it is really difficult to count.
