Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/25/2011

Number: 3040

We have many many hummers, old and young, coming and peacefully sharing five feeders in close proximity, and another singular feeder on the opposite side of the house. There is a definitive difference in behaviors between the singular feeder and its users, and the group of five feeders together within two feed of each other. All consume 2.6 gallons in a week. There does not seem to be a decrease in the food consumed, nor an increase. Lots and lots of juveniles who are now beginning to get in their mature feathers, so they are developing more distinctive markings. One juvenile is white over most of his body, and a number of our birds seem to have a white spot on their head that makes them look bald. It seems that mature females are larger than the mature males. Feeders are right outside kitchen window so we get lots of entertainment for our commitment to keep those feeders full.
