Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/25/2011

Number: 400

At approximately 8:00 p.m. this evening my husband went outside to feed our dogs and noticed some fluttering above his head. Upon closer examination we found 7-8 different spots where the Monarchs were settling in for the night. Smallest bunch was approximately 10, largest bunch was approximately 100-150. All told we are estimating we had between 200 and 400 roosting. Neither of us (nor my 79 year old mother) have ever seen anything like it. Sun was setting; temperatures were approximately 75 degrees. Absolutely stunning! It was interesting how they looked like dried leaves, until they started fanning their wings. Incredible!
