Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/26/2011

Number: 1

Checked a known narrow leaf milkweed patch for monarch larva after first sightings of adult butterflies in the area in over eight years. Have been unable to find any larva on this small patch of narrow leaf milkweed in about ten years. Today, we found two monarch caterpillars... One was about 20mm long and on a single plant. The other was located about 20 feet away on another small clump of plants. The second specimen was about 40mm long. While these were the only two larva we could find, it is two more than we have been able to find in a long time. This small patch of narrow leaf was once a very productive and favored patch in years past.
