I saw only two monarchs in my garden so far this (Aug. 27) summer. I've collected two caterpillars, one chrysalis then turned black and did not emerge. The other monarch made it out but then died. I just saw one more caterpillar on the milkweed. I did not collect it.
This entire summer (2011) has had fewer butterfly species than ever.
