Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/29/2011

Number: 30

We were gone during the hurricane and even though we left food out during our absence, they ran out of food and moved to the neighbors feeders during our absence. The neighbors have coveted our hummers all summer so it was a treat for them to have our birds show up at their feeders. Early this morning we only had one to three birds at the feeders, when normally we would have 6-20 males females and juveniles feeding at the same time. There was a dominant juvenile male beating off all challengers early in the morning. By late morning the others were returning and joining together to foil the bully. By afternoon we had good traffic again, but there appears to be fewer males than we had before. My neighbor said he ran out of food this afternoon, but he refilled his feeders and some birds remained at his house and did not return to us. Tomorrow I will see if our male population increases. We did have many many birds at our feeders by evening. It appeared to be close to normal traffic of males females and juveniles...there appeared to be lots and lots of juveniles.
