Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/31/2011

Number: 30

Great weather brings out the monarchs on our busy urban boulevard in full force! Midday count was consistent at approx. 30 butterflies feeding on the blazing star liatris. Since we have so many plants on the boulevard, they definitely prefer blazing star liatris to all others (coneflower, rubekia, cardinal flower, etc.). We also have another variety of prairie liatris that is blooming and they totally ignore those plants. Again, all appear to be very active, great shape, playful, yet feeding to prepare for the long flight home. Too bad their visit is so short! Temperatures were in high 70's/low 80's; light breeze.
