Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/01/2011

Number: 45

Today temps hit a high of low 90's with lots of humidity -- although us humans aren't too happy with the turn of the weather, it seems to have brought the monarchs out and they LOVE it!. Today's midday count topped at approx. 40-45, picking up another 10-15 from the last several days. Multiple butterflies feeding on the blazing star liatris, all lined up with only breeze or motion pulling them off their task. Still haven't figured out where they roost at night; clearly the word is out we have the best blazing star liatris cafe in the neighborhood OR the additional 10-15 are newly hatched. My neighbor thought she saw several pairings attempting mid-air mating; i don't know enough about whether at this late in the season is the case or it was monarch pileup & play!

Tonight's forecast is rain with the temperatures dropping to low 70's, maintaining that temp for the next several days. Also, possibility of scattered showers. Will report as it seems a bit too early by about 5-7 days for them to take flight! We'll see...!
