Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/02/2011

Number: 1

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds began to show up in numbers about ten days ago (~ 8/24/11). We have flowering plants in the backyard, esp scarlet salvia and Turk's cap, plus have three feeders. Newspapers ran articles here in Texas this past week asking readers to please put out HB feeders because with the extreme drought there are so few nectar sources left for them. We are seeing males and females equal right now (possibly an edge to females) with the peak of RTHB to occur about the 15th and tapering down towards the 1st of October. We will have a few HBirds that will overwinter here along the midcoast of Texas. A few Rufous and Blackchins have been seen up and down the coast this week. So far the hummers in our backyard much prefer the natural red flowers to the feeders but the next week or two that could change. With them not coming to the feeders, the best count I've gotten has been eight at one time this week ... it was like counting marbles dropped from the sky as they were diving from the backyard trees to ground level to the flowers.
