The feeding frenzy has begun. Up to 20 male and female monarchs are feeding on my 3 white butterfly bushes all at the same time. I checked in our wind protected wildflower area on our back property, and there were over 30 monarchs feeding on the joe pye weed and cup plant. I checked for roosting behavior that evening, but they are still roosting in the trees alone, not in clusters.
On Sept 3rd, the feeding activity increased to a frenzied pace, even in the drizzling rain.
I have a worn out female (still laying eggs!) and paroling male in my garden yet, but they are tattered and dull colored. I also have caterpillars in every instar. There will be monarchs coming from this area until mid October if the weather cooperates.
