Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/14/2011

Number: 1

Female monarch seen in my home back yard. One other monarch flew around earlier in the month but I forgot to write it down.
Note: 7 miles south of my yard the Virginia Living Museum has this year a live butterfly exhibit which released female monarchs sporatically [along with other species] over the summer from Memorial Day Saturday until Labor Day. I brought potted milkweed plants into the Butterfly House the first week in August and the monarchs in the BH laid eggs all over it. I transferred caterpillars to my garden plants and if I found pupae I brought them back to the BH to be put on display & released. Many caterpillars from these eggs disappeared in my yard due to predators but if some survived & I didn't find the pupae, I may have artificially increased the number of monarchs in the area.
