Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/06/2011

Number: 50

Midday Count: 50+ butterflies....!!! They are creating a dazzling sight on the boulevard! Temps today have hovered between 71-73F and sunny, only periodic clouds passing by -- perfect temps to keep our winged friends warm and active. Today each blazing star liatris has 6-8 butterflies feeding and with the slight breeze, they will periodically alight and and hover over the boulevard before settling in to feed again. All today look healthy, active and focused on feeding -- but still quite playful. I'm not seeing much evidence of northern MN or Canadian butterflies who always arrive towards the end of the stay -- more faded, tattered and tired. Today I put an open invitation on our neighborhood Facebook page to stop by and check out the butterflies ('bring your camera'). Also have periodically posted a link to Journey North to increase awareness of how people can keep monarch population strong and education on their incredible migration. A great way people in the city can protect the environment! This week is forecast to be absolutely beautiful so I'm hoping our numbers continue to grow!
