Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/31/2011

Number: 1

I would just like to report that we saw a fairly large number of monarchs along the Maine coast on August 31. Some of them seemed disoriented, hovering over the large granite boulders along the seashore, unable (we speculated) to find nourishment, although there are some flowers growing there in random spots. The exact location was Schoodic Peninsula, the easternmost part of Acadia National Park, at Schoodic Point. A ranger said it was worth reporting if we saw a significant number, and also identified the other butterflies that we saw in large numbers that day as Mourning Cloaks.
