Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/04/2011

Number: 27

I spent the morning on 9/4/11 from about 9 a.m. to Noon at Canelo Marsh - I checked out the south and northside near Milepost 14. I tagged 19 Monarchs and out of 19 only 3 were males. That is quite unusual for that area. We mainly see males. Another unusual thing was the amount of female Monarchs that were laying eggs. Saw quite a few 5th instar caterpillars. Asclepias subverticillata patches were in bloom and found female Monarchs feverishly laying eggs on new spouts. Amazing how large the female abdomens were. Males were nectaring on thistles in bloom. Saw a Monarch throw down another Monarch. Guessing that is mating behavior? Went out the next day and saw more males nectaring in AM. On Friday, had visited with Joe Billings, the Arivaca Cienaga and Sharp Springs. In total, tagged 37 Monarchs.
