I just completed my weekly butterfly transect at Bauermeister Prairie, a 30-acre remnant tallgrass prairie on the southwestern edge of Omaha, Nebraska, and thought you might be interested in the results. It was a nearly perfect day for the Monarchs, temperature around 72 Fahrenheit with light winds from the northeast. I counted a total of 44 Monarchs. 10 were in obvious migration, either in steady directional southwestern flight or thermalling to gain altitude. But perhaps even more significant was that 24 were nectaring on Tall Thistle; this is clearly a crucial nectar source for the migrants as well as the last reproductive generation in my part of the world.
