Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/09/2011

Number: 1

Saw many dozens of Monarchs feeding on goldenrod 9/8/11. Saw a few that were newly emerged, but most were very active scattered on the three hill areas. The surprise of the day was that I saw at least four Monarchs begin their migration. All in separate events, I witnessed the Monarchs take to the sky and keep going, riding the thermals and wind currents higher and higher until they were out of sight. Three of them were feeding on minute and on their way to Mexico the next. One of them was in a merry-go-found flying game with another Monarch when it suddenly shot up into the sky and was gone. I suspect that many more left yesterday, and that remaining butterflies will begin their migration today......NE winds predicted.
