Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/08/2011

Number: 30

Midday Count: Approx. 30+ monarchs feeding on blazing star liatris. Its in the low 80s today, sunny blue skies, light breeze, puffy clouds -- a perfect September day! Appears that another 10+ monarchs may have taken flight. Perhaps we have already seen our 'peak migration' numbers we reported a few days ago of 60+?) I checked my reports from last year and TO THE DAY, we had 60+ count -- yet last year we had several days later (comparable to this weekend), we had a cold front, wind and some rain. This year the temps are predicted mid 80s, mostly clear (no rain). Since weather may not be the same as last year, I'm now concerned about food supply as liatris blossoms are 30% spent. We'll see...We also put out this year a low bird bath and kept it filled with water -- haven't seen any monarchs drinking out of it -- perhaps they prefer coffee like most folks in our neighborhood! Signing off from a sunny, busy urban street in Southwest Minneapolis! pm
