Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/09/2011

Number: 2

Our first sightings today of dedicated flight to the SSW here along the midcoast of Texas ... two in an hour and a half around noon. We were pulling out to go to the senior citizens country club for lunch at 11:15 am when Altus spied a large orange butterfly nectaring next door on a Gold Star Esperanza plant. We watched as a monarch worked the plant then flew around their house. At 12:45, we were leaving the Light House beach near the causeway when we saw another monarch chugging to the SSW at 2-3 feet right in front of us. We see nothing out in the countryside for either the monarchs or hummingbirds to nectar on, BUT feel that as the monarchs come right along the bays from Lousiana towards us they might find something that is blooming near the tidal ponds, creeks, and rivers. As soon as we find a few we are going to check their condition this far down the line. The monarchs in the Central Flyway west of San Antonio, west of Abilene, might find a bit more that is green ... now we wait and see how well they handle it, WE aren't doing so well!
