Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/09/2011

Number: 12

Lots and lots of hummers still coming to our feeders. This evening there were a dozen surrounding me while I was sitting out next to them at their dinner time feeding. I could see a dozen at one time, so I am sure there are way more than a dozen still here at our house feeders. We even have a bully sentinel chasing off other comers, all is pretty normal here still...except no mature males are around, though some of the juveniles are developing mature feather color. Unfortunately I can't tell what is a mature female or juvenile male or female unless they seem to be developing a ring around the neck or nearly black head....I am guessing size tells me something and I do still have a number of large size hummers without the red neck. I would appreciate any guidance on how to tell the difference between mature females and immature juveniles. Our birds have eaten 2 gallons over the past week. We think the week before that was about 2.6 gallons...I didn't check the records today to be sure. Lots of body checking like hockey players do, lots of hummer chatter and diving. They continue to eat from plants too. We have continuous birds all day without a break.
