Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 09/12/2011

Number: 1

Writing from Narragansett, RI, we still have both females and one male ruby-throated at our feeders and the trumpet vine. Fellow bird
watchers report the same in our vicinity, surprising us since hummers usually have left by the third week of August. We are wondering if
Lee's sea salt laden winds that dried up most food sources are a factor in the delay, or Mother Nature again knows something we don't,
such as another storm to influence their journey.

During the rain last week, one female hover outside our kitchen window as if she was telling us she needed more nectar and not the diluted
liquid she found in the feeder. We quickly restocked the feeder and they worked until dusk sometimes aggressively chasing another hummer away.

Birds that normally have migrated are still with us as well. Narragansett is on the edge of a fly way, so it is common to see transients pause as
they migrate. We enjoyed the chattering all weekend as groups circled our property moving from one feeder to another.

Determined to enjoy the activity until they sadly leave on their journey...
