Sept 11:
On a half-day field excursion to 6 park areas in western Montgomery County, MD (close to or bordering the Potomac River), monarchs were seen in good numbers at each location. All were nectaring on the following
species: field thistle, New York ironweed, wingstem, tall goldenrod, grass-leaved goldenrod, blue mistflower, and tickseed sunflower. The only butterfly species more abundant than monarchs was common buckeye.
There were hundreds of them at each location.
Sept 12:
Black Hill Visitor Center Monarch Waystation in Boyds, MD 20841
A female monarch was observed ovipositing on swamp milkweed and tropical milkweed today. This is the latest date for this activity at this location in over 20 years. Also, a search of milkweed plants yielded numerous 1st, 2nd, and 3rd instar caterpillars.
