Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/13/2011

Number: 1

Peak migration is past here, but we still had some Monarchs on the back hills, perhaps a couple of dozen. I saw three or four actually begin their migration flights; it's always a thrill to see one lift high into the sky and keep going. A very happy/sad thing...........
I was lucky enough to actually tape one or two feeding and then to get them flying away until they were just a speck in the sky.
Cold today. Started in the 40s after last night's cold front moved in. It had been 90 on Tuesday (9/12). Today was sunny and the Monarchs were flying this morning with the temps in the low 50s. Highs were low 70s today, perhaps. Wind was NW switching to WNW so Monarchs that were ready to migrate did so.
The six on our back hill and a few on the neighbors hills continued to feed this afternoon. Might lose a few more tomorrow, but it's going to be cold. 50's for a high, but some sun and NW winds predicted.
Checked an alfalfa field about 4:30 p.m. but saw no Monarchs. I had hoped some migrants would find it. Could be it was too early....or our supply from up north has been exhausted.
I expect a few more Monarchs to emerge by late September here.
