Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/09/2011

Number: 1

Waystation 2554 reporting up to 13 Monarchs at a time here today. A cool/wet spell in SE Michigan was interrupted by a warm but overcast day this morning. I have lots of larval host plants around but have seen no evidence of late-season egg laying or even any cats for a couple weeks. However, as stated they are really moving through the area now. There was no wind in any direction this morning and they were all very leisurely fueling-up and warming up. The biggest attractor is a thirty foot long row of ten-foot high non-native Butterfly Bush shrubs.

The minority are sitting on Goldenrod but the Butterfly Bush rules around here. I hope it’s not bad for them. Looking for other SE Michigan Monarch reports. From what I remember this year’s abundance is similar to last so we are sure to be sending many healthy ones south in the weeks to come! Be on the lookout.
