Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/11/2011

Number: 14

With 3 backyard feeders going, we are seeing 14 or more at a time. Of course, they are very active so a precise count is difficult. There may be more, perched in nearby bushes and feeding on our blooming esperanza, hibiscus and duranta. The species we have been seeing are native buff-bellied and transient ruby-throated hummingbirds, a mix of both sexes. They begin feeding at the feeders with barely any light in the morning sky and seem to be most active in the evening hours. This has been our most successful year so far with hummingbirds.
