Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 09/18/2011

Number: 5

For the past week there have been 5 male hummingbirds at my 3 feeders. 3 Ruby-throated and 2 black-chinned hummers with a large female following. 6 Ruby-throated females & 5 black-chinned females. Not sure if the black-chinned are left over from summer, but the Ruby-throated are definately migrants. Yesterday finally ended our record days of drought. We had rain all day intermitently and the hummers were still flocking to the feeders in the rain. Definitely storing energy anticipating their long flight. I will have one or two black-chinned that will remain through the winter on one feeder. It doesn't get very cold here usually, but your comment on bringing feeders in of a night to keep food at room temperature is a good one.
