Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 09/18/2011

Number: 1

I have just about given up on recording the time I see the hummingbirds, mostly male ruby-throat. Every time I look out my kitchen window, which is often on weekends (I work full-time), I see hummers. They are on the feeders, on the black and blue salvia, on the justicia, on the hummingbird plant, or chasing each other around. I have NEVER seen so many male ruby-throats. I have seen some females also, but far more males.

I have had two unusual sightings. Thursday evening, when I got home from work, I looked at the feeder hanging in the crape myrtle, and there was a skinny snake (I think garter snake)that was wrapped around the chain holding the feeder and had it's head about an inch from the feeder. I didn't know if it was thirsty or waiting for a hummer, so I went out, took it's picture, and escorted it out of the tree. Have not seen the snake since.
Today, I saw a male ruby-throat, who was sitting on the feeder in the tree, chase a chickadee that was just passing by!
