While working in the garden a monarch appeared and landed on a mexican sunflower. We were able to get several photos. Monarch's have been rare sightings here in the past few years so I was surprised to see it. What was surprising was that a hummingbird appeared at the same time. For the past week we have seen only 1 or 2 hummingbirds pass through each day. About twenty minutes later I saw either a new pair or the same pair enter the garden and this time they definitely appeared to travel together with the hummingbird following the monarch right to the red dahlias and actually appeared to try to push it away from the dahlia. I found this sight by searching for migration of both to see if this was a common sight. The hummingbirds that pass through now ignore the feeders and go to all the flowers spending a lot of time at each - cardinal climbers, fuchsias, dahlias, nasturtiums, bee balm and mexican sunflowers.
