I was surprised to see one hummingbird yesterday even though we had been hit by Hurricane Irene last week. It did not have a red throat but was green, female? I had brought in the food overnight as you suggested and she was looking for it. Hope she comes back today. Our nights have been 40 degrees now these past 4 days. It is forecast to get warmer.
