Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/20/2011

Number: 400

I work at a wholesale nursery in east central Kansas, we have appx. 2500 Buddleia davidii (Butterfly Bush) on the property. The past few days I've noticed an influx of Monarchs, but today there were hundreds (400? 500? 600?) sitting on these plants. I thought it was worth reporting. I just wanted to tell SOMEONE what I'm seeing.

September 21
I took some pictures today, unfortunately it has been rainy and overcast all day. How long do they hang around? I think that 4-6 hundred that I observed was a conservative guess; today there was < 20. Maybe they're not as active today do to the cooler temps/rain/clouds and then again maybe they've just moved on. In the pictures of the plants, just imagine them COVERED in Monarchs. The reason it caught my eye yesterday was because from a distance I thought I had a serious problem with the plants! Boy, was I wrong! It was an amazing sight that I hope I'll get another chance to photograph.
