Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/19/2011

Number: 15

I met my son after 5pm and we headed out to the same area where we
found the monarchs roosting last year (a little more than halfway from
the gate to the bridge). I saw one fresh viceroy and about 20 - 30
monarchs, feeding mostly on the western side of the road away from the
strong easterly winds coming in off the lake on the eastern shore.
There were several very small clusters in a few of the poplar trees;
the largest contained about 15 monarchs (does that qualify as a
roost?) but much to our disappointment only a couple more showed up
during the hour we hung around.
