Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/20/2011

Number: 40

October 2
Thursday, 9/29/11, the winds changed to the north in the afternoon. The thirty of so Monarchs that had been staying in my yard and roosting at night all left. Friday, only spotted two Monarchs in the yard. Saturday, there were four. The big group has moved on. Warm weather is forecast for this coming week, and winds will again be from the south. It will be interesting to see if numbers again build up again or not. It seems early for all the activity to be over.

September 28
The Monarchs have been here everyday with roosts at night. Saturday was a peak day with upwards to 70 Monarchs nectaring mid afternoon. Sunday through Tuesday, the winds were from the north and the numbers diminished some. Today, the winds have been from the southwest, and the Monarchs have seemed to "backup" into the yard. This evening, I counted at least 40 nectaring. It's hard to get a good count as they move. While I was mowing, about a dozen swirled up into the air from a Vitex bush. This is my favorite sight--dancing butterflies!

September 20
Yesterday (9/20), the yard filled with Monarchs. I counted at least 40, but there could have been more. I had to go out last night, so I didn't get to watch to see if the Monarchs roosted in the trees around the yard. This morning I got up early and saw clusters of Monarchs in the trees. I would estimate at least 40. This is the largest roost I have had in my yard. Today (9/21) the Monarchs are still nectaring. The winds have shifted so the numbers have decreased, but I got a photo of a cluster of 10 nectaring on the Tropical Milkweed.
