Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/20/2011

Number: 123

Had a wonderful experience September 20, 2011 from 6:45 pm to just before sunset at around 7:15. Have only seen this once before since moving to this area in 2003. Counted 123 monarchs flying steadily westward just above treeline and higher along the ridge we live on, about 1,800 feet. Just as the sun was setting, they started roosting in the trees, mainly oaks. They would position themselves underneath the leaves and with their wings together, were surprisingly hard to see once you looked away and tried to find again.
