Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/21/2011

Number: 19

I counted 19 monarchs during a 20 minute bike ride. They were all nectaring in fields of purple clover. It was easy to spot them from the distance as soon as I trained my eye:

1) Watch for little sulphur butterflies dancing above the flowers (this means nectar),

2) Look for the large, dark dot hanging on a flower. That may mean a monarch. Also look for clover that seems to be bending under a butterfly's weight.

3) Keep watching and, within 30-60 seconds, the butterfly is sure to fly off to the next flower. Once it's airborne there's no mistaking a monarch.
