Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/22/2011

Number: 1

4 Monarchs, seen individually, in directional flight, (coming from northeast-heading southwest over Susquehanna River). 2 out of the 4 stopped to nectar on my butterfly bushes before resuming flight.

2 other Monarchs have been nectaring in my backyard for several days, likely not the migratory generation.

We collect eggs off my milkweed plants and raise the caterpillars in a secure environment, releasing them on the day the butterfly emerges. If we did not do this, the egg predators would destroy nearly all the eggs. After having several summers with almost no Monarchs, it is worth all the time it takes to raise Monarch caterpillars and help secure the future of Monarchs!
We have successfully released almost 100 Monarchs, despite a very late arrival of egg laying females in this very rainy year.
