Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/24/2011

Number: 1000

Monarchs roosted in 70 foot tall sugar maple. I observed for 2 hours as Monarchs arrived from 2 to 4 pm Eastern.

I live in a rural area right on the north shore of Lake Erie about 10 miles from Point Pelee National Park. My yard seems to be a staging area. I've never seen roosting on nearby properties. Butterflies gather and then leave for Pelee when the wind is right. In 1995 we had so many monarchs on an oak tree that you could hear the sound of wind in their wings when they departed. That roosting was on my daughter's 5 birthday August 24, so I remember it well. Since then roostings have been later. This year is the latest I can recall.
The butterflies have acres of golden rod and milk weed which grow in the ravines which empty into the lake. Also, there is about 250 acres of alfalfa within a mile of my house.
