Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/24/2011

Number: 1

Today, we had a light migration through Point Pelee with about 5 monarchs per minute flying off the tip heading southwards towards Ohio. It was a cold morning (10 degrees Centigrade) which got them going. But, being a cloudy day with a light wind from the south at 10 km./hr. blowing against them, this migratory wave was light in numbers.

It's been an unusually wet September this year with already 13 days of rain. This kind of weather doesn't normally arrive until the first of October. The rain has held monarchs back, preventing the big wave of migrants through southwestern Ontario so far. But, we are quite excited to see on your website the thousands of monarchs slowly trying to get here along the lakeshores near Toronto and Burlington. When the weather clears for long enough, we should see some larger migratory waves, more like what has been happening out west for a couple of weeks now. Weather certainly plays a big part in how the migration plays out.
