Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/20/2011

Number: 3

The 1 adult female left late last week. For the first time one of the juvenile females (1/2) defended her position on the feeder by not leaving when harassed by the other. I wonder what that means. Is it some kind of maturity? Or a statement claiming the territory for next season? I have never seen hummers physically fight, so I wonder if this assertiveness is like deer butting heads to determine the king of the herd. Perhaps hummers are matriarchal.
