Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/25/2011

Number: 85

On a partly sunny/cloudy 78 degree humid day I spotted over 85 monarchs flying from east to weston Ocean Parkway and Jones Beach. There was a slight north-westerly wind. The unusual thing is historically I spot them at Robert Moses beach which is approximately 15 miles east of today's sighting, however this year there are very few less than 10% I spot at Robert Moses Beach. Over the past week the golden rod which has been a feeding staple for the monarchs, had popped and is now in full bloom and plentiful.I don't know if they modified their flight pattern or why the change?

I returned to Robert Moses Beach again on Monday 09.26.11 and I did not see a single monarch, very bizarre.
